CastorCastor School is a voluntary controlled Church of England school in the village of Castor, very close to Peterborough.  We are the local school for Castor and Ailsworth as well as the nearby villages of Marholm, Sutton and Upton.  The school is set in its own grounds in the centre of the village, close to our church St Kyneburgha’s.

Nicola Wynne (our new headteacher) and Gill Vessey, the lead teacher for Global Dimension, are passionate about the children becoming global citizens and are very excited about the opportunities that the project can provide.

We are very fortunate to live in such a close family community, with the church and school closely linked in the centre of the village.  Our size and location make us different from the majority of other schools in the city.  One disadvantage, however, is that we are a mainly homogeneous community, without the opportunities to experience the richness and diversity of a multi-cultural society.  Having recognised this we have already put into place global citizenship lessons and we have set up a link with a school in New Delhi in India.  We also teach Spanish to all children from reception to year 6 in regular weekly lessons within the curriculum.

We see the global dimension project as a way to:

  • acquire knowledge of the wider world and encourage respect for different cultures
  • develop self-awareness and a positive attitude to difference
  • reflect on the consequences of our own actions now and in the future
  • develop effective skills for communication and to be able to argue a case on behalf of ourselves and others
  • think critically and creatively about topical and controversial issues
  • participate in society as active and responsible global citizens

We are currently developing our whole curriculum around the eight global dimension concepts and relish the opportunity to teach these skills through deep learning in all subject areas using a multi-sensory approach.
