St Thomas More Roman Catholic Primary School
St Thomas More RC Primary School is a large primary school on the eastern side of Peterborough with a rapidly expanding roll. It serves its immediate locality and also admits children from all parts of the city and often beyond because of the parents’ preference to send their children to a Catholic school. The school achieved Full International School status in 2007.
The socio-economic status of the area served by the school is much less advantaged than other areas. There are 390 pupils on roll and as a result of the expansion roll the school moved to two-form entry from September 2007.
A very high percentage of the children in the school have English as an additional language (68% increasing from 43% in two years). The majority of these children are White European (35%). There has been a recent influx of families from Poland with 78 children joining the school between June 2006 and September 2007. The children from these families have settled very quickly and their English is developing well due to the level of support given to them from our full-time EAL Co-ordinator and her team of Bi-lingual Teaching Assistants.
In the school as a whole, 16% of the children are eligible for free school meals; this is roughly in line with the national average. 21% of children have special educational needs but they are well supported by the school’s SENCo and her team of High Level Teaching Assistants and Teaching Assistants.
The school is well supported by two learning Mentors and a team of hardworking, enthusiastic and caring staff.
