Children's Rights: Education by Katie Duckworth

This glossy hardback book is one in a series of five to help explore the theme of children's rights with a younger audience. The book explores the right to an education, and why some children are unable to go to school. The book includes several colour photographs and five case studies of children from Vietnam, India, Nepal, DRC and Kosovo, some of whom are unable to go to school, due to conflict or homelessness. The book makes some very complex subjects come alive for a young audience. |
First Steps to Rights by UNICEF

This is a well constructed and user-friendly pack for incorporating global perspectives into teaching and learning. It provides an introduction for very young children to the basic rights of all children and the responsibilities that accompany them. Each unit of work explores a specific theme with objectives, materials, a range of activities and conclusions. Extracts from the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child give validity and endorsements to many aspects of the work of teaching and support staff. The photos depict interesting everyday situations with vocabulary and information on the reverse side. The activities are designed for whole class or group work and differentiated for younger and older children. Overall, an excellent resource that will inspire teachers to teach young children about their rights and responsibilities. |
Rehearsing our roles by TIDE

This short collection of drama activities related to Citizenship is useful for the non-specialist but also for those with extensive experience teaching Drama or Citizenship. There is not much structure to the booklet, but it does contain useful classroom ideas, and provides accounts of projects which have worked well in Primary and Secondary lessons. It would be a good standby for any school trying to develop this kind of work. A companion booklet "Rehearsing the event" raises issues and offers support to Theatre in Education practitioners seeking to develop links with schools through Citizenship. |
